It certainly wasn't what you would expect at a birthday party for a five-year-old. In place of a shiny new bicycle or much-asked-for-doll, there were a number of dog collars in different colors. And bags of cat food, new puppy beds and litter boxes. And it all came about when local Sarasota businesswoman Mary Jo Heider suggested the idea of a benefit birthday party to her daughter Lindsey. Thinking it would be fun to help out, Lindsey asked her friends to bring supplies for the Sarasota County Humane Society in lieu of gifts. The response was so overwhelming, that by the party's end, Mary Jo had a car packed with supplies that she helped Lindsey excitedly deliver. For Mary Jo, there couldn't have been a greater gift, or a more important life lesson, to give her daughter.
Lindsey is now a few years older and is still involved with volunteering (her time now) for the homeless pets at the Sarasota County Humane Society. Mary Jo is a realtor: "my philosophy of life has always been to do whatever I could to make a real difference in the lives of others. It's the same way I approach my clients' real estate goals and the only way I know how to do business."
Consider the above story, and decide how YOU can help "Make a difference"
